Facebook vs Twitter

Twitter is not Facebook and Facebook is not Twitter.

As a business owner, you’ve certainly heard that being active on social media is a great marketing tool. But which social media platforms should you use?

It makes sense to start with the two big guns of the social media world; the behemoth, Facebook, and the younger challenger, Twitter.

For veteran users of both platforms, this statement is well understood. But for marketers and brands new to either network, or for those with an extensive level of experience in one but not the other, the differences are not immediately apparent.

Lets take a look at some of the advantages and disadvantages of both:

Facebook and Twitter have many apparent similarities, both in functionality and in jargon, including:

  • Usernames
  • Profile Pages
  • Avatars
  • Status Updates
  • Tagging

Both platforms also provide an outstanding way for businesses to market themselves to users, and offer first line customer support. However, the use of similar terminology aside, the ways in which these features are both implemented and received are often very different.

Twitter

Advantages:

  • Easy to make new contacts beyond your friends.
  • Simple user interface.
  • Highly interactive. Allows you to communicate directly with your customers and address their comments or concerns.
  • Posts, or “tweets,” enjoyed by your followers are often rebroadcast as re-tweets.
  • You can search all posts on Twitter for key words relevant to your business.
  • Twitter users are usually open to making connections with people they don’t know.

Disadvantages:

  • Tweets are a moment in time, then lost in a user’s Twitter feed.
  • Can only post links to one photo at a time.
  • Limited to 140 characters for a post (unless you are using additional external applications).
  • Direct messages can only be sent to one user at a time.

Facebook

Advantages:

  • Photo albums and older posts remain on your wall long after initially made.
  • Can post multiple photos.
  • Not limited to 140 characters for status updates. Can be as wordy as you wish.
  • Some businesses are even using their Facebook Page as their blogging platform.
  • Large user base.
  • Can send a direct Facebook mail to all of your fans at once.
  • Can add videos to your page.
  • Facebook provides detailed insights on the users of your Page.

Disadvantages:

  • Can be difficult to get fan interaction on your Pages. Feedback levels are commonly found at 2% or less on any given post.
  • Although fans can “share” your posts, it doesn’t occur as freely.
  • Cannot search Facebook users’ posts. In fact, users’ status updates are usually not visible unless they are a “friend.”
  • Facebook users tend to be looking to make connections with people or groups they already know.

Perhaps the most important difference between Facebook and Twitter is the size of the respective networks. As of July 2011, Facebook had over 750 million registered monthly active users (from their own words). Twitter is not giving its user data, but according to estimations it ranges somewhere between 200 and 300 million users. However, these numbers only reflect registered accounts — the active user count on Twitter is considerably smaller.

What are Facebook and Twitter for?

Facebook appeals to people looking to reconnect with old friends and family members or find new friends online. All features like email, instant messaging, image and video sharing, etc. feels familiar, while Twitter is a bit harder to get your arms around at first.

Most people can easily understand how to use Facebook to connect to friends and family, using it to share thoughts, images, ets.  Facebook is a social networking Portal, that will make you not to leave but rather to stick around and communicate within the network.

Twitter on the other hand, encourages you to jump on and take a byte-size chunks of cool info, or simply let others know what you’re up to at any given moment.

How to use Twitter and Facebook?

Your goal on Facebook is to “friend” people. You need to find those, who want s to be your friends, or already are your friends. You will post updates about your brand, news and you will build relations with your costumers.

Your goal on Twitter is to make as much people to “follow” you as it is possible at all. You want  your circle of influence to grow, regardless of you know them or not.

In other words, I would rather use Twitter to meet new people from all around the world withing my targeted niche. Facebook for me is mostly to stay connected and develop good relationship with those, whom I already know.

Rip Off Scam: FREE Gas Cards

Rip Off Scam about FREE Gasoline: Beware!

Rip Off Scam

Gas prices are going up so it is time for all the pyramid scheme gas games to come crawling out of the dark corners of the web and rip off scam can be among them.

Economic recession is really putting pressure on the people’s pocket and all are trying to save money in one way or the other. And at this time it appears that new scams are making the rounds, and they target everyone who is sick of high gas prices.

Rip Off Scam #1:

There are some hundreds of mythic “$200 gasoline card rebate” or “$300 gas cards” programs are scamming mailboxes, email accounts and even radio channels today. There were even some car dealers, who became involved in this kind of “offers”, believing, that they are doing something good to their customers.

The way those cards work are thus: you activate the card and choose the brand of gasoline you’ll be buying (Exxon, Chevron, Wal-Mart, etc). You then save your receipts every time you buy gas from the specified brand (and ONLY that brand). You already can smell rip off scam!  At the end of every month, if you’ve bought $100 or more worth of gas, you mail in the original receipts, and 30-60 days later you “get” a $25 gift card good for gas or merchandise from the brand of supplier you enrolled with. If you haven’t bought $100 or more worth of gas, you forfeit the $25 gift card for that month. This keeps up for (x/25) months, where x is the face value of the gas card.

Haa, and here is comes truth!

  • If you don’t spend at least $100/month in gas, you get nothing from this card.
  • Even if you do normally spend $100/mo in gas, any month you fall under that amount you leave money on the table. You can’t just accrue it to the next month, or get an extra month to meet your quota
  • You’re locked in to the brand of gas you chose.
  • It’s not clear when the gift cards expire
  • If you forget to grab a receipt, or you don’t mail them in time, you’re left behind.
  • AND A BIG ONE: according to the rip off scam reports, 100% of those, who believed in this either  did not receive their cards, or received just couple of them after waiting up to 20 weeks (Waaa! Great!)

Rip Off Scam #2:

“Free gasoline vouchers” programs is the next one inline.

Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum has sued a company that for alleged deceptive marketing of gasoline redemption vouchers. The vouchers were sold by distributors to retail merchants who in turn offered the vouchers to encourage sales of retail products and services. The lawsuit states hundreds of thousands of these vouchers may have been provided to consumers across the country.

Consumers with vouchers were required to register with certain organization through websites, or by mail and pay a $5 fee for registration. Registered consumers were allegedly entitled to receive gift cards from upon submitting receipts for gasoline purchases that complied with the requirements of the program.

The Attorney Generals Office is aware of over 500 complaints from consumers who never received the gift cards and is aware of at least 1,300 additional complaints reported to the Better Business Bureau and other authorities.

Rip Off Scam #3:

Be aware of a phone solicitation scam. The caller is claiming that the person has won a gift from their financial institution for being a member or customer in good standing. In the past, this group has used the business names of Distinct Advantage, Suntasia, Freedom Gold, and Capital Vacations. They say they are authorized to give members a $100 gas voucher and a $400 or $500 travel voucher, all they need is your account number and other private information. THIS IS A Rip Off Scam! They are not acting for any of the companies, and they are not giving away anything. They are scam artists trying to get your financial information for fraudulent purposes. HANG UP on them, and report the call to the Consumer Protection Division

Rip Off Scam #4:

A “company” is promises gas vouchers and magazines for a small trial fee ($1 – $5), but instead it takes a total of $125.00 – $300.00 from your account within a one to two week period. You are calling them and they are telling you that you agreed to the charges. WAKE UP!!! You will never receive the vouchers! They will choose some magazines with no return address for you and start sending them even if you do not read magazines.

These cramming scams know that, so they are built on hiding the “terms” that they later claim authorize their fraudulent charges.  Then they make promises or excuses or just stonewall consumers calling to get their money back.  If they can delay the consumer’s bank dispute past the 60 day dispute window, they are usually home free, since it is not likely to be worth suing over these small charges scams.

If you are a victim of this rip off scam, than immediately send disputes to the BBB, file claim with police and file “charge back” with your bank.
